Short answer: on cost, Substack is worth it for a free newsletter (it's $0 at any list size) and for a paid one with only a few paying readers. It stops being the cheap option once 10% of your monthly paid revenue is more than a flat-fee plan: at 5,000 subscribers that's $1,090/mo of paid revenue against beehiiv Lite and $750/mo against Ghost Publisher ($350/mo against Ghost at 1,000). For paid newsletters under 10,000 subscribers, Kit's free plan (3.5% + $0.30 per payment, all-in) costs less than Substack in our scenario at every size we tested. You own your list and can export it at any time, but leaving with paid subscribers needs care: Substack's own "Disconnect Stripe" button refunds and cancels them all.

What Substack costs you
- Free newsletter: $0, no subscriber limit.
- Paid newsletter: 10% of each subscription payment to Substack, plus Stripe's 2.9% + $0.30 per US card payment and 0.7% Stripe Billing on recurring payments.
- Custom domain: optional, one-time $50.
- App purchases: Substack's 10% is based on your web price; you choose whether in-app prices go up to cover Apple's fees.
Break-even: when a flat fee beats the 10%
| Subscribers | beehiiv Lite cheaper above | Ghost Publisher cheaper above |
|---|---|---|
| 1,000 | $590/mo (74 paid at $8) | $350/mo (44 paid at $8) |
| 2,500 | $790/mo (99 paid at $8) | $550/mo (69 paid at $8) |
| 5,000 | $1,090/mo (137 paid at $8) | $750/mo (94 paid at $8) |
| 10,000 | $1,390/mo (174 paid at $8) | $1,050/mo (132 paid at $8) |
| 25,000 | $1,990/mo (249 paid at $8) | $1,690/mo (212 paid at $8) |
Monthly paid revenue where 10% equals the plan's monthly price (beehiiv Lite $59 / $79 / $109 / $139 / $199, Ghost Publisher $35 / $55 / $75 / $105 / $169 at these sizes). All three run on your own Stripe account, so card and Billing fees are the same on each and don't move the break-even. Yearly billing lowers it further.
Our standard scenario: 5% of the list paying $8/month
| Subscribers (5% pay $8) | Substack | beehiiv | Ghost | Kit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1,000 | $69.40 (Free + 10% of paid revenue) | $88.40 (Lite) | $64.40 (Publisher) | $29 (Free) |
| 2,500 | $173.50 (Free + 10% of paid revenue) | $152.50 (Lite) | $128.50 (Publisher) | $72.50 (Free) |
| 5,000 | $347 (Free + 10% of paid revenue) | $256 (Lite) | $222 (Publisher) | $145 (Free) |
| 10,000 | $694 (Free + 10% of paid revenue) | $433 (Lite) | $399 (Publisher) | $290 (Free) |
| 25,000 | $1,735 (Free + 10% of paid revenue) | $934 (Lite) | $904 (Publisher) | $924 (Creator) |
Per month, monthly billing. Paid totals = plan + platform cut + Stripe card fees (2.9% + $0.30 per payment, estimate) + Stripe's 0.7% Billing fee on recurring payments where confirmed (beehiiv, MailerLite, Ghost, Buttondown, Substack, AWeber and Flodesk); not added for GetResponse (not confirmed); Kit's 3.5% + $0.30 is all-in. How we model fees.
At 5,000 subscribers ($2,000/mo revenue) Substack totals $347/mo vs beehiiv $256, Ghost $222 and Kit $145. At 25,000 ($10,000/mo) Substack is $1,735/mo; beehiiv $934 and Ghost $904 cost less.

Pros and cons (from Substack's own pages)
- Pros: free to publish at any size; no monthly bill while you grow; readers can subscribe and pay in the Substack app; you own your email list and can export it any time.
- Cons: 10% of paid revenue for as long as you stay; no automation builder: you get one welcome email per subscriber type (free, paid, imported, founding), not multi-step sequences; your publication keeps Substack's branding; the subscriber export has no names.
How to leave Substack without losing readers
- Export everything: Settings → Exports → "Create new export". Substack emails you when the zip (posts, subscriber list, stats) is ready. For a list-only CSV: Subscribers → All subscribers → three dots → Export.
- Move paid subscribers before touching Stripe. Ghost's importer can bring them over if you connect the same Stripe account (Substack to Ghost steps); beehiiv has its own route (Substack to beehiiv steps).
- Know what Disconnect Stripe does: per Substack, it refunds and notifies all paid subscribers, cancels all paid subscriptions and revokes Substack's access to Stripe. If you're moving platforms, Substack says to ask a human support specialist through its support widget for help disconnecting.
- Delete only at the end: Settings → Danger Zone → Delete your Publication permanently deletes content and list. Paid publications must disconnect Stripe first or the option won't show.

FAQ
Is Substack worth it for writers?
On cost, yes for a free newsletter: Substack charges $0 at any size. For a paid newsletter it keeps 10% of each subscription plus Stripe's fees, so it's the cheaper choice only while 10% of your monthly paid revenue is below a flat-fee plan: beehiiv Lite is cheaper above $1,090/mo of paid revenue at 5,000 subscribers, Ghost Publisher above $750/mo (monthly billing).
How much does Substack take?
10% of each subscription payment, plus Stripe's 2.9% + $0.30 per US card payment and Stripe's 0.7% Billing fee on recurring payments. A custom domain is an optional one-time $50. Example: 25,000 subscribers with 5% paying $8 ($10,000/mo) means $1,000/mo goes to Substack's cut alone.
Do I own my subscriber list on Substack?
Substack says you always own your readers' email addresses and can export them at any time, including readers who subscribed in the Substack app. The CSV export doesn't include subscriber names.
How do I leave Substack?
Export first: Settings → Exports → "Create new export" gives a zip with posts, subscriber list and stats. Paid publications must turn off paid subscriptions (Danger Zone → Disconnect Stripe) before the Danger Zone lets you delete the publication, and deleting is permanent.
Will leaving Substack refund my paid subscribers?
If you click Disconnect Stripe, yes: Substack says it refunds and notifies all paid subscribers, cancels every paid subscription and revokes its access to Stripe. To keep paid subscribers, move them to the new platform first (Ghost can import them by connecting the same Stripe account), then ask Substack support for help disconnecting.
Is Kit cheaper than Substack for a paid newsletter?
Under 10,000 subscribers, usually yes: Kit's Free plan allows paid subscriptions at an all-in 3.5% + $0.30 per payment. In our scenario that's $29 vs $69.40/mo at 1,000 and $145 vs $347/mo at 5,000. Kit Free has no visual automations and keeps Kit branding.
