Paid newsletter supported countries (2026): where you can sell from on Substack, beehiiv, Kit and Ghost, plus currencies, payouts and VAT/sales tax
Last verified against official pricing pages · published 31 Oct 2026
Short answer: every major paid-newsletter platform pays you through Stripe, so you can only sell paid subscriptions from a country where Stripe works (51 on Stripe's list). Substack, beehiiv and Ghost follow Stripe's list, with a few exceptions on Substack and India invite-only on beehiiv. Kit is stricter, with 39 countries. Free newsletters can be run from anywhere. On tax, Substack starts collecting and remitting VAT and sales tax for you on 1 December 2026. Kit collects only VAT (you file it), and on beehiiv and Ghost you set up Stripe Tax and handle tax yourself.
Everything below comes from each platform's own help pages and Stripe's supported-countries page, all checked 31 Oct 2026. Where a platform doesn't say something, we write "not stated" rather than guess. This is not tax or legal advice.
At a glance
| Platform | Seller countries | Currencies | Payouts | VAT / sales tax |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Substack | Stripe's list, with exceptions for India, Brazil, Indonesia, Mexico, Malaysia and Thailand | You pick a default currency per plan, plus localized prices in 13 currencies | Daily or weekly; web payments usually within 48 h; first payout 7-14 days | From 1 December 2026: Substack collects and remits (not for sellers in Brazil, Mexico, Malaysia, India, Thailand) |
| beehiiv | Stripe's list; India invitation only | Not stated (beehiiv says Stripe may not support "certain currencies" in rare cases) | Not stated by beehiiv; your own Stripe account's schedule | You complete Stripe Tax onboarding in your Stripe account; you can collect tax IDs |
| Kit | 39 countries | USD, EUR, GBP, CAD, AUD, NZD | Weekly on Fridays; first payout 7–14 days after your first sale | VAT only, once you turn it on; you register and file. No US sales tax or Canada QST |
| Ghost | Not stated separately; Stripe is Ghost's "exclusive payments partner", so Stripe's list applies | Not stated on the pages we checked | Not stated by Ghost; your own Stripe account's schedule | Stripe Tax integration (beta); you register; "Stripe does not remit your taxes for you" |
Fees aren't part of this page. Substack takes 10%, beehiiv and Ghost take 0% (Stripe fees only), and Kit charges 3.5% + $0.30 including processing. For what you keep after fees, see Substack paid subscribers (vs beehiiv and Ghost).
Country lookup: can I sell a paid newsletter from my country?
Below are all 51 countries on Stripe's supported-countries page, checked 31 Oct 2026. Labels such as "Extended network" and "Preview" are Stripe's own, and Stripe's page doesn't explain them. Stripe says that once it works in your country, "you'll be able to sell to customers anywhere in the world". Your readers can be anywhere. This list only limits where you (your Stripe account) are based.

Not on the list (for example Pakistan, the Philippines, China, Russia, Turkey, Egypt, Argentina, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka): none of these platforms can take paid subscriptions for an account based there, because they all pay out through Stripe. You can still publish a free newsletter. Substack suggests Stripe Atlas, which sets up a US company and bank account, as a workaround. That creates US company and tax obligations of its own, so get local advice first. Ghost, Buttondown and Flodesk also pay out only through Stripe and don't publish their own country lists.
Currencies
- Substack: set the default currency on each plan from a dropdown. Localized pricing is on by default. It shows readers a local price in CAD, GBP, AUD, EUR, USD (for non-USD publications), BRL, CHF, DKK, MXN, NOK, NZD, SEK, PLN (EUR covers the 20 Eurozone countries). Prices of 50 or less round up to the nearest whole unit, and higher prices round up to a multiple of 5. Substack updates the prices about every 3 months, and Stripe charges 1–2% for the conversion.
- Kit: six currencies, one per product, and you can't change it later. The fixed part of the fee depends on the currency: USD 3.5% + $0.30, EUR 3.5% + €0.25, GBP 3.5% + £0.20, CAD 3.5% + $0.30, AUD 3.5% + $0.30, NZD 3.5% + $0.30. Payouts arrive in your bank account's currency.
- beehiiv, Ghost: no currency list on the help pages we checked (not stated, 2026-10-31). beehiiv says "in rare scenarios, Stripe may not support certain currencies with the beehiiv setup due to country restrictions imposed by Stripe".
- Buttondown: you choose the currency for each subscription plan. The list of currencies is not stated.
Payouts: when the money reaches you
| Platform | Who pays you | Schedule | First payout |
|---|---|---|---|
| Substack (web) | Your Stripe account | Daily or weekly (your choice); payments "usually arrive … within 48 hours of each transaction" | 7-14 days for a new Stripe account |
| Substack (iOS in-app) | Apple → Substack → your Stripe | Monthly, up to 45 days after month end (January sales by mid-March) | Not stated |
| Kit | Stripe account created through Kit | Weekly, on Fridays | 7–14 days after your first sale |
| beehiiv | Your own standard Stripe account | Not stated by beehiiv; set in Stripe | Not stated by beehiiv |
| Ghost | Your own Stripe account | Not stated by Ghost; set in Stripe | Not stated by Ghost |
| Flodesk | Your Stripe Standard account | "Regularly"; next date shown in Stripe | Stripe "can sometimes delay the first payout by 7-14 days" |
When a platform pays into your own Stripe account, Stripe's payout rules apply. You choose daily, weekly or monthly payouts, and Stripe "typically schedules your initial payout to complete within 7–14 days" depending on your industry, country and risk level. Some countries have fixed schedules: in Brazil and India payouts are always automatic and daily, Japan has no daily payouts (manual is the default), and Thailand defaults to daily automatic payouts.
Who handles VAT and sales tax?
Substack: changes on 1 December 2026
- Until 1 December 2026: an optional Stripe Tax integration. You turn on Stripe Tax, register with the tax authorities yourself, and ask Substack support to switch it on. Tax is only charged where you're registered, and Stripe Tax costs 0.5% per transaction there.
- From 1 December 2026: Substack calculates, collects and remits sales tax and VAT on your behalf at no extra cost. This happens automatically for every publication with payments turned on and replaces the old Stripe Tax integration. Tax shows as a separate line on the reader's receipt. Existing subscribers see it at their next renewal.
- What you should review before then: which content types you sell (written posts, video, live streams, podcasts, voiceovers, private community access, digital perks), and whether your price includes tax. Including tax in the price is only possible for publishers outside the US and Canada. For readers in the US and Canada, tax is added at checkout. By default Substack applies the highest rate among your content types. You can instead choose "Adjust tax according to the benefit value" to split the price across types. Substack's own example is a $100 subscription with types taxed at 5% and 20%: the default charges $20 of tax, the split charges $8.
- Not covered: publishers based in Brazil, Mexico, Malaysia, India, Thailand. Substack says they "remain responsible for calculating, collecting, and remitting sales taxes/VAT". Payments made before 1 December 2026 keep their existing obligations.
Kit: VAT only, and you file it
Turn on VAT under Settings → Revenue → Taxes → Collect VAT and add the jurisdictions where you're registered. Kit then works out the rate, issues VAT-compliant receipts and gives you a VAT report (CSV). You still register, file returns and pay the VAT, and the VAT is included in your price. Kit says: "Kit collects VAT only. Other taxes, including US sales tax and Canada QST, aren't charged or collected for you."
beehiiv, Ghost, Buttondown, Flodesk: through your own Stripe account
- beehiiv: "To automatically apply tax to invoices, complete the Stripe Tax onboarding process within your Stripe account". You can also collect readers' tax IDs (Subscriptions → Tiers → Settings → Collect tax IDs). beehiiv doesn't say it files or remits anything.
- Ghost: Stripe Tax integration, in beta. You enable Stripe Tax and add your registrations in Stripe. Then Ghost(Pro) customers email Ghost support to switch it on, and self-hosters set a labs flag. Tax only applies to new paid members. Ghost: "Stripe does not remit your taxes for you."
- Buttondown: its docs say "Stripe automatically reports and collects taxes for your paid newsletter". They also say you may need to register with your local tax authority, using Stripe's monitoring tool to check.
- Flodesk: you can enable sales tax or VAT collection on a subscription product, and renewals recalculate tax from the billing address. Who files and remits is not stated (2026-10-31).
Other platforms with paid newsletters (MailerLite, AWeber, GetResponse): their help pages on paid subscriptions only say to connect Stripe. Seller countries, currencies, payout timing and tax handling are not stated (checked 2026-10-31), so Stripe's list and your own Stripe settings apply.

FAQ
Is Substack available in Pakistan, the Philippines, China or Russia?
You can run a free Substack publication from anywhere. Paid subscriptions need a Stripe account in one of Stripe's supported countries, and Pakistan, the Philippines, China and Russia weren't on Stripe's list when we checked (2026-10-31). Substack's own suggestion is Stripe Atlas, which sets up a US company and bank account. Check the legal and tax side where you live before you do that.
Is Substack available in Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana or South Africa?
Yes for free publications. For paid ones, Stripe lists Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, South Africa and Côte d'Ivoire as supported with the label "Extended network", and Substack doesn't list them as exceptions. Substack's help doesn't say anything else about these countries (checked 2026-10-31).
Can I sell a paid Substack from India?
Only if you already had a Stripe account connected. Since May 2024, creators in India who aren't connected can't open a new Stripe account through Substack and have to ask Stripe for an invite. Substack doesn't charge its 10% fee in India or Brazil for now, but says it "will eventually apply". Stripe's processing fees still apply.
Which countries can I sell a paid newsletter from on Kit?
39 countries: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Gibraltar, Greece, Hong Kong, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, United States. That is fewer than Stripe supports. Brazil, Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Malaysia, Mexico, Nigeria, South Africa, Thailand, United Arab Emirates are on Stripe's list but not Kit's.
Which countries does beehiiv support for paid subscriptions?
beehiiv sends you to Stripe's supported-countries list and says India is "invitation only". You connect your own Stripe account. beehiiv also warns that "in rare scenarios" Stripe may not support certain currencies with the beehiiv setup.
Does Substack collect VAT and sales tax for me?
From 1 December 2026, yes. Substack will calculate, collect and remit sales tax and VAT for every publication that takes payments, at no extra cost. The exception is publishers based in Brazil, Mexico, Malaysia, India or Thailand, who stay responsible themselves. Until then, Substack only offers an optional Stripe Tax integration: you register with tax authorities yourself, and Stripe Tax charges 0.5% per transaction where you're registered.
Does Kit collect VAT or US sales tax?
Kit collects VAT only, and only once you turn it on and add the jurisdictions where you are registered. You still register, file and pay the VAT. Kit says other taxes, including US sales tax and Canada QST, aren't charged or collected for you.
How do Substack payouts work?
Payouts go from Stripe to your bank. Web payments usually arrive within 48 hours of each transaction, and you can choose daily or weekly payouts. The first payout on a new Stripe account takes 7-14 days. Apple pays for iOS in-app subscriptions monthly, up to 45 days after the month ends, so January's App Store sales reach your Stripe account by mid-March.
How do beehiiv and Ghost pay you?
Both put your subscription money into your own Stripe account, and Stripe pays out to your bank. Neither one states a payout schedule. Stripe says you pick daily, weekly or monthly payouts, and the first payout is typically scheduled 7–14 days after your first live payment.
Can I change the currency of my Substack subscription?
Yes. Substack lets you pick a default currency per plan. With localized pricing (on by default), readers can also pay in CAD, GBP, AUD, EUR, BRL, CHF, DKK, MXN, NOK, NZD, SEK, PLN, or in USD if your publication isn't in USD. Stripe charges 1–2% for the conversion.
