Short answer: the beehiiv API itself is free on every plan, including the Free plan (up to 2,500 subscribers). beehiiv lists no API price and no per-call fee. What changes with the plan: the rate limit (30 requests/minute on Free, 180 on Lite, 500 on Pro, 800 on Enterprise), webhooks (from Lite, $59/month) and the Send API for creating and sending posts (Pro and Enterprise, from $109/month at up to 1,000 subscribers, monthly billing).

What the API costs you at your list size
Because beehiiv prices plans by newsletter subscribers, not by API calls, the API cost is simply the cheapest plan that has the feature you need:

Per month, monthly billing, USD. Yearly billing is cheaper (Lite $49/mo and Pro $95/mo at 1,000, see beehiiv pricing). Free covers up to 2,500 subscribers (see beehiiv free plan); above that the cheapest plan with API access is Lite. A higher rate limit (500 vs 180 requests/minute) is another reason to pick Pro.
Rate limits in detail
- Per credential: each API key and each OAuth access token gets its own allowance, measured in fixed 60-second windows (beehiiv docs).
- Over the limit: the API returns
429 Too Many Requests. Responses carryRateLimit-Limit,RateLimit-RemainingandRateLimit-Resetheaders; beehiiv recommends a queue plus exponential backoff. - Quirk: the first request from an idle credential is enforced at the default of 180 before your plan's limit takes over, so beehiiv says to configure your client from its table, not from one response.
- Not stated by beehiiv: any daily or monthly request cap, or any paid way to raise the limit outside Enterprise.
Send API: what it can and can't do
- The Send API is the Create post endpoint (
POST /v2/publications/{publicationId}/posts), on Pro and Enterprise (API reference, help article). - Content goes in as beehiiv blocks (the same widgets as the post editor, so ads, polls and buttons still work) or as raw HTML in
body_content. The email head and required footer are fixed; beehiiv says it does not offer 100% custom HTML email. - Since August 6, 2026, a request without
"status": "confirmed"creates a draft instead of publishing, including whenscheduled_atis set. - Post creation runs in the background: you get the post id at once and fetch it later (202 while it's still being created).
- Free trial conflict: the pricing page says "Send API (not in trial)", but beehiiv's free-trial article lists Send API as usable during the 14-day Pro trial and the Send API article says it "is available on the Free Trial". Plan for Pro if you need it after the trial either way.
API keys, webhooks and no-code tools
- Keys: Settings → Workspace Settings → API. Only Owners and Admins can create keys, and you must first pass a one-time Stripe identity verification. The full key is shown only once. On paid plans a key can be limited to selected publications; on Free a key reaches every publication in the workspace (beehiiv).
- Webhooks (Lite and up) send events such as new, confirmed, upgraded or deleted subscriptions, post sent, survey responses and podcast episodes, delivered through Svix with signed requests (beehiiv docs). A common use is sending published posts to WordPress or another CMS (beehiiv).
- No code: beehiiv maintains Zapier and Make integrations and says both stay within its rate limit; beehiiv support only covers those two (beehiiv docs). Zapier and Make charge under their own plans.
- Enterprise extras: custom rate limit and S3 Data Sync, a nightly export of opens, clicks and bounces to AWS S3, Cloudflare R2, Backblaze B2 or Wasabi, sold as a paid add-on (price not stated, beehiiv).

Is the beehiiv API free?
Yes. beehiiv lists "API Access (excluding Send API)" on its Free plan, and API access is "Yes" on Free, Lite, Pro and Enterprise in its feature table. beehiiv lists no separate API price and no per-call fee: what you pay is the plan itself (Free up to 2,500 subscribers, then Lite or Pro by list size). To create API keys you must be a workspace Owner or Admin and verify your identity with Stripe once.
What is the beehiiv API rate limit?
Per beehiiv's developer docs: 30 requests per minute on Free, 180 on Lite, 500 on Pro and 800 on Enterprise (Enterprise can ask for more). Not stated by beehiiv. Its pricing page and developer docs list no per-request price, no overage fee and no daily or monthly request cap; the only stated limit is the per-minute rate limit per plan.
