Short answer: "beehiiv referral program" means two things. The Referral Program lets your readers earn rewards for referring new subscribers; it needs a paid plan (Lite: up to 3 milestones, from $59/month; Pro: unlimited) and isn't on Free. The Partner Program is beehiiv's affiliate program: you earn 50% (beehiiv's affiliate page says up to 60%) of what the people you refer pay for 12 months, and they get 20% off their first 3 months.

Part 1: the subscriber Referral Program

You set milestones (a number of referrals) and a reward for each. Every subscriber gets a personal link; when someone signs up through it and confirms, it counts. When a subscriber hits a milestone, beehiiv sends that milestone's email and lists them under Fulfillment.

Per month, monthly billing, USD; yearly billing is cheaper (see beehiiv pricing). The beehiiv Free plan (up to 2,500 subscribers) has no referral program, so adding one means moving from $0 to at least $59/month. beehiiv's help articles say it's also available on the free trial. beehiiv takes no fee per referral; your other cost is the rewards.

Reward types

Physical: merch such as t-shirts; beehiiv has partnered with Slingshot to dropship without you holding stock (beehiiv publishes no Slingshot prices). Physical rewards are fulfilled by you or your supplier, not automatically.
Promo code: discounts or trial codes; you upload and manage the codes.
Digital: a file, URL, eBook, PDF or course access; can be delivered in the milestone email and auto-fulfilled.
Paid subscription gift: a paid subscription as the reward, if you run paid subscriptions on beehiiv. Cheapest to give, since it costs you no cash.

How it works day to day

The referral block: type /Referral Program in a post. Four templates (default, next milestone, up to 3 rewards, or both). It shows only in the email, not on the web post, because each link is personal.
Pending referrals: referred subscribers stay Pending until they confirm, to stop fake signups.
Review before sending: you can hold milestone emails for manual review instead of sending them automatically, and mark achievements as ignored.
Changing milestones: rewards are only calculated when a new referral arrives, so raising or lowering a milestone doesn't re-score past achievements.
Automations: a Referral action trigger can start a workflow when someone hits a milestone or a referral count you set.
Your domain and data: the referral hub uses your custom domain if you have one; you can download referrals as CSV. Moving from another tool? beehiiv's support team imports existing referral data on request.

Moving off beehiiv? Substack has its own subscriber referrals, built in at no extra cost (for paid publications the default rewards are comped paid time at 2, 10 and 25 referrals; see Substack paid subscribers), but beehiiv referral counts don't transfer. See beehiiv to Substack.

Part 2: the beehiiv Partner Program (affiliate)

Separate from reader referrals: here you refer people to beehiiv itself and earn a share of what they pay. Anyone on a beehiiv plan, including Free and trials, can join from the Partner Dashboard and gets a link like beehiiv.com?via=yourname.

beehiiv's affiliate page shows an earnings estimate based on its own "average" figures; we don't repeat it because what you earn depends entirely on which plans your referrals pick. A worked example from the price list: someone you refer to Lite at 1,000 subscribers pays $47.20/month for 3 months, then $59; at 50% you'd get $23.60, then $29.50 a month.

Is the beehiiv referral program free?

No. beehiiv lists the Referral Program under paid plans and its Free plan doesn't include it. The cheapest option is Lite, $59/month for up to 1,000 subscribers (monthly billing), with up to 3 referral milestones. Pro (from $109/month) has unlimited milestones. You can try it on beehiiv's free trial. beehiiv charges no extra fee per referral; you pay for the rewards you give.

How many referral milestones can I have on beehiiv?

3 on Lite, unlimited on Pro and Enterprise. A milestone is the number of referrals a subscriber needs to unlock a reward; each milestone has one reward and one milestone email.

What rewards can I give in a beehiiv referral program?

Four reward types: physical (merch; beehiiv works with Slingshot for dropshipping), promo code, digital (a file, link or digital product) and a paid subscription gift (if you have paid subscriptions set up). beehiiv publishes no Slingshot prices.
