Selling digital products with Kit (2026): fees, what works on the Free plan, payouts, VAT and limits

Last verified against official pricing pages · published 2 Nov 2026

Prices change often. Each price was checked on the platform's official pricing page on the date shown; plans, promos and taxes vary. Confirm on the official site before you buy. Not financial advice.

Short answer: yes, you can sell digital products with Kit on every plan, including the Free plan (up to 10,000 subscribers). There is no monthly fee for it: Kit takes 3.5% + $0.30 per sale in USD, card processing included, and pays out weekly on Fridays through a Kit-managed Stripe account. You can sell files, links, paid newsletters, payment plans and tips. Kit collects EU/UK VAT if you set it up, but not US sales tax.

Every rule on this page is from Kit's own help center (Sell digital products with Kit and 13 linked articles), checked 2026-11-02. No platform pays us for this page; some buttons elsewhere on the site are paid links.

What Kit charges when you sell

Product currencyKit fee per sale
USD3.5% + $0.30
EUR3.5% + €0.25
GBP3.5% + £0.20
CAD3.5% + CA$0.30
AUD3.5% + A$0.30
NZD3.5% + NZ$0.30

From Sell your products in different currencies. The fee follows the product's currency, not yours: a US seller with a product priced in EUR pays 3.5% + €0.25. Each product has one currency, which can't be changed later. Tips carry the same 3.5% + $0.30 fee (Tips). There's no monthly Commerce fee, and Kit says there are no other fees. Kit's pricing page separately lists a fee on Paid Recommendations earnings, which isn't a product sale.

What you keep on a one-time sale

PriceKit feeYou keepFor comparison: Stripe card fee alone
$5$0.48$4.53$0.44
$10$0.65$9.35$0.59
$25$1.18$23.83$1.02
$50$2.05$47.95$1.75
$100$3.80$96.20$3.20

USD. Kit fee = 3.5% + $0.30. The last column is Stripe's standard US card rate (2.9% + $0.30, stripe.com/pricing), which is roughly what you'd pay selling through your own Stripe account on a platform that adds no fee of its own. It's an estimate: Stripe's rates differ by country and card. If you're VAT-registered, VAT also comes out of the price, because Kit prices include VAT.

Paid newsletter or subscription: Kit vs Stripe-based platforms vs Substack

Subscription priceKit0% platforms on Stripe (beehiiv, Ghost, others)Substack (10% + Stripe)
$5/mo$0.48$0.48$0.98
$10/mo$0.65$0.66$1.66
$25/mo$1.18$1.20$3.70
$50/mo$2.05$2.10$7.10

Fee per monthly payment, USD. Stripe-based rows add Stripe's 2.9% + $0.30 card rate and its 0.7% Billing fee on recurring payments (Stripe Billing), the same estimate our calculator uses. Kit's fee already includes processing. On recurring payments Kit's 3.5% + 30¢ comes out slightly below the 0%-fee platforms' Stripe estimate, while on one-time sales (no Billing fee) a 0%-fee platform on Stripe is a little cheaper. Monthly plan prices are not included in either table. Run your own numbers in the calculator with "paid subscribers" filled in, or see best platform for paid newsletters.

What you can sell, and how

Payouts, refunds and failed payments

VAT and tax

Kit can calculate and collect EU and UK VAT once you enable it under Settings, Revenue, enter your business address and add the jurisdictions where you're registered. Each product then needs a product type and tax code (e-book, electronically supplied service, SaaS and others). Prices are VAT-inclusive: Kit's example is a $20 product at 20% VAT, where you keep $16 before other costs. Kit issues VAT-compliant receipts and a VAT report, but registering, filing returns and paying VAT are your job. Kit does not collect US sales tax or Canada QST (collecting VAT, VAT obligations, Kit). This isn't tax advice; Kit's own articles say the same.

Is Kit a good place to sell?

Which Kit plan? Commerce is the same on every plan. Paid plans add automations, sequences and badge removal: see Kit Free plan and Kit Creator vs Pro, and Kit pricing for every tier.

FAQ

Can you sell digital products on Kit's free plan?

Yes. Kit says Commerce "is available on every plan, including the Free plan". You pay no monthly fee for it, only 3.5% + $0.30 per sale in USD. The one difference on Free is that the "Built with Kit" badge stays on your product pages; paid plans can remove it.

How much does Kit charge per sale?

3.5% + $0.30 per transaction in USD, and Kit calls it "the only cost of selling through Kit". It already includes card processing. In other currencies the percentage is the same and the fixed part changes: €0.25 in EUR, £0.20 in GBP, 30 cents in CAD, AUD and NZD. On a $25 sale that is $1.18.

What can you sell with Kit?

Anything delivered digitally: e-books, courses, templates, presets, music or a paid newsletter. You can also sell access to a link (for example a members-only page or a hosted course), and charge for something like a live workshop that you deliver yourself. Kit does not ship physical products and has no product bundles; Kit suggests one product with several files or a link to a page instead.

Do I need my own Stripe account to sell on Kit?

You need Stripe, but not your existing account: Kit has you create a new Kit-managed Stripe Express account when you set up payments, even if you already use Stripe. Stripe is the only payment processor Kit supports, and your products stay in draft until payments are set up.

When does Kit pay you?

Weekly, on Fridays, to your bank account in its own currency. The first payout takes longer: Kit says to expect it 7–14 days after your first successful sale.

Does Kit handle VAT and sales tax?

Only VAT for EU and UK buyers, and only after you turn it on (Settings, Revenue) and add the jurisdictions where you are VAT-registered. Prices are VAT-inclusive, so VAT comes out of your price, and Kit sends VAT-compliant receipts and gives you a VAT report. Registering, filing returns and paying VAT stay your job. Kit does not collect US sales tax or Canada QST.

Which countries can you sell from on Kit?

39 countries: Australia, Canada, Gibraltar, Hong Kong, Japan, Liechtenstein, New Zealand, Norway, Singapore, Switzerland, the UK, the US and every EU country Kit lists (all 27). Our paid newsletter supported countries guide covers for Substack, beehiiv and Ghost.

Can I refund a Kit purchase?

Yes, from the buyer's subscriber profile (Purchases tab), for one-time products or a single payment of a subscription. Only full refunds are possible for now, and Kit's overview says processing fees aren't refunded.
